The weight of the world: Considering Overpopulation

Overpopulation

There's a lot of talk these days about global warming, reducing your carbon foot print, alternative energy resources, which makes me wonder when politicians and the general populous alike will take a look at the serious issue of over-population?

The United States census bureau estimated that, as the clock ticked over to 2008, there were 6,641,114,623 people in the world. By 2050 it estimates the world population will be 9.4 billion.

Earth isn't an ever expanding celestial body, capable of maintaining such a large population. The signs of the strain on the planet are all around... from global warming, ever-dwindling food production, pollution, deforestation to make room for more farm land and housing, and the vast and growing list of endangered species. Will the human race continue to grow and push the planet to its breaking point or will we collectively and actively pursue a solution for this looming issue?

What do you think?

I believe overpopulation will lead to a series of mechanics which will thin us out somewhat. War, epidemics, disease and pandemics among other things. Not that I'm cheering at the prospect of course ;) I might sound like a misanthropist but it might not be a bad thing for the earth's sake!

We will manage somehow. The previous generation was not very responsible, but I have great hopes on the children and teens of today. They have more foresight.

Who knows? We will start by lving undeground or in the sea or the moon!

That would be awesome! I have hopes for the kids too, hopefully they can invent or discover what we haven't. Oh the possibilities =D

Sorry, Kenny, but I disagree.

Not only will humans NOT do what is necessary (we are collectively too narcissistic) but to have humans invade the oceans will most likely lead to even faster destruction of the planet.

The only viable solution to so-called sustainability of this planet is to reduce our consumption and emissions.

That, my friend, means wide-spread birth control.
